Zinc

This is one of the most important nutrients for male health. Zinc not only affects prostate health, it also plays a role in testosterone boosting. Zinc can also improve potency.

Regarding estrogen reduction, zinc inhibits aromatase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen. You get zinc from foods such as beef, pork, liver, oysters, watermelon, and Brazil nuts.

Supplement with 30 – 50mg per day. But don’t exceed 80mg per day.

Nettle

Stinging nettle or nettle root reduces the conversion of testosterone to DHT.  DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a more potent form of testosterone.

DHT occurs naturally as men age.  But this form of testosterone is linked to hair loss, prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia), and possibly cancer.

Perhaps the more exciting action is its ability to bind with SHBG. Nettle contains 3,4-divanillyltetrahydrofuran.  In fact, bodybuilders use its SHBG binding properties to increase free testosterone by effectively “crowding out” testosterone.

You can take 250mg per day of nettle root to get the effect. However, make sure you use the “root” extract or powder not the “leaf”. The nettle leaf has a different medicinal use.

Pygeum (prunus africanum)

Like nettle, pygeum can bind with SBHG and result in more free testosterone boosting. Also, pygeum along with nettle inhibit the 5-alpha reductase action.  And this works as a preventative treatment for BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) or enlarged prostate.

Tribulus Terrestris

This herb boosts testosterone and improves symptoms of impotence and infertility. Tribulus contains steroidal saponins which act to increase testosterone. Several human studies have shown tribulus can boost male hormone by 30% or more. In addition,  tribulus improves sexual function and libido.  It may also improve cardiovascular health.

Keep in mind, these results are only typical if you have low testosterone.

Fenugreek is an herb found in Indian food. Nursing mothers have used it to increase milk production. It can also decrease blood sugar levels for individuals with type II diabetes.

Bodybuilders use fenugreek as a testosterone enhancer.  However, there is no proof it has any effect. Though some powerful natural supplements show up in the bodybuilding community well before the general public hears of its value.

Horny Goat Weed (epimedium)

Horny Goat Weed also enhances sexual function. Epimedium has been known for centuries as an aphrodisiac. How it works is not clear, but some researchers believe it reduces cortisol levels. A flavanoid in epimedium called icariin can inhibit PDE-5.  ED drugs work with similar function.

Muira Puama For Testosterone Boosting

Muira puama, an herb found in South America, boosts libido. It also increases energy, strength, and sexual function when deficient testosterone is suspected.

Tongkat (Eurycoma Longifolia, Long Jack or Pasak Bumi) is an asian bush with medicinal properties. An extract made from the roots not only increases libido, but also boosts lean muscle gains.  Tongkat may also reduce body fat. Though not proven in human studies, it’s taken as a powerful testosterone booster. However, you won’t see the effects for weeks.  The supplement cost is rather high – $70.00 for a 2-3 month supply.

L-Dopa

A dopamine precursor, l-dopa increases libido and can also impact testosterone production. Though l-dopa is usually available in prescription form, natural l-dopa comes from the beans of the mucuna pruriens plant. Unlike prescription l-dopa, natural l-dopa is a gentle boost of libido.

Chrysin

Chrysin is a bioflavanoid that can inhibit aromatase and boost testosterone. Because of poor absorption, a suggested companion supplement to aid absorption is piperine.

DHEA

Your body produces DHEA naturally.  However, DHEA is a testosterone precursor available as a supplement. It is natural and safe and boosts testosterone. But like any hormone, too much can be harmful.  Your physician should test your DHEA before supplementing with pill form.

Actually, DHEA is the most abundant hormone in your body.  However, just like testosterone and other hormones, it declines as you age. By age 65 you produce only about 10% of what you did at 20. DHEA also reduces cortisol and naturally boosts testosterone production.
